What is LexDex?

LexDex is an e-learning website that saves students the time and hassle of making flash cards for the vocabulary in their textbooks. We’ve taken those annoying and heavy stacks of easy to lose index cards and turned them into paperless, digital flash cards that can be not only be studied online, but on your phone as well. Our database has the vocabulary from over 500 textbooks and counting. Our primary focus is foreign language books, such as Chinese, Spanish, and French, but we’ve already begun to expand to other popular subjects like economics and the sciences. In today’s fast-paced life, the goal is to help students study efficiently, yet conveniently by allowing them to study anywhere and anytime.

September 1, 2008: E-Learning Site LexDex.com Launches into Beta Testing this Fall with Help of Campus Reps Program

LexDex.com, an innovative e-learning website designed to help students study more efficiently launches into Beta testing this fall. By taking material straight from textbooks and creating a massive online database of key terms and points, LexDex is able to supplement students'study routines, adding convenience and ease of use. Once online, students select their textbook, and are then instantly ready to study for their next test with interactive flash cards and study guides. To help boost its user-base and generate awareness among students, LexDex has initiated a campus representative program, which will employ several student representatives on a select number of campuses.

HOW IT WORKS

Unique from other e-learning sites, LexDex takes real material from classroom textbooks and turns it into live, web-based content. For example, by changing a simple vocabulary list into a huge database of flashcards, students can flip and switch or even remove words they've become confident with from the stack. The study material maintains the same structure as the original textbooks, so it's easy to look up the chapter you're currently on.

Not only has the studying process become faster by eliminating the time used to make your own flash cards, but it has also become much more convenient. LexDex puts all the study materials online, so that students can study from any computer with an internet connection. This saves them from the hassle of downloading software onto their computer and allows them to easily share or access the contents of their textbooks. The site saves any progress, so students can log on and continue right from where they left off.

Theodore Niekras, a senior studying at the University of North Carolina, has been pleasantly surprised by how valuable he has found LexDex to be. “Because it's so flexible and easy to use, I've found my study time has really been cut down. It's also pretty enjoyable to use.”

Students are encouraged to register as soon as possible and take advantage of the Beta testing offer. Until 2009, all subscriptions at LexDex are free of charge.

CAMPUS PRESENCE

LexDex is hoping to make its presence known on several campuses throughout the country this semester—campuses like Wake Forest University, UC San Diego, and New York University. By staffing energetic, young campus representatives (many of whom spent the summer interning at the company), LexDex will be getting involved on a student-to-student level, a type of interaction often lost among similar web-based companies.

These representatives will be responsible for communicating the LexDex mission and involving the different departments on campus. While focusing some of their energy on traditional publicity with an event like trivia nights and distributing information pamphlets, they will also be an important liaison between LexDex and their campuses. Representatives will be facilitating joint programs with various campus departments to increase awareness of LexDex and overall productivity when it comes to studying.

LexDex has also forged a relationship with Alpha Kappa Psi, America's oldest professional business fraternity, allowing their members a great opportunity to learn from and collaborate with a quickly developing startup company. AKPsi will be seen throughout the semester promoting awareness of the site and getting students to take advantage of this valuable learning resource, by handing out promotional gifts during welcome week and organizing campus events.

Interested students and organizations looking to get involved can simply e-mail campusreps@lexdex.com.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

LexDex launched into its Alpha testing phase in April of 2007. Since then, it has managed to boost its database of textbooks to well over 500 – a number that continues to grow as LexDex grows in popularity. The range of their subjects is also quickly broadening from an initially solid collection of foreign language texts (Chinese, French, and German and Spanish to name a few) to economics and art history as well.

Edward Kim, LexDex Co-Founder, is enthusiastic about his site. “A lot of other e-learning websites start from the institutions and work their way top-down to the students”, says Kim. “What's missing is a platform that focuses first on students, then the teachers, and then the university”. Kim believes such a website lends to students' intrinsic learning value, whether teachers and colleges implement it into their curriculum or not.
